It’s certainly been much more than a hot minute since I’ve posted, but that’s because I’ve been working on some other things. Freelancing, working on fanzines, and also dealing with school now, of course, and other stuff. I figured I’d write this post just to help me get back into the swing of blogging and to fill you guys in on what I’ve been doing these past few months.
1NE.) Getting into Freelance Writing
I’ve always loved to write and I love to express my opinions and feelings – which are plenty – about things, and I’ve wanted to get into freelance writing for some time, but I’ve never aimed for the big publications like New York Times or anything of that nature. Most of my life, places like that were (and for the most part still are) dominated by white male voices, and I never connected to any of the things they said nor could I tolerate the condescending tone in which they wrote most everything. Only recently did I discover that there were smaller publications and websites that were specifically looking for my voice as black, bisexual, and female on things like pop culture, art, politics, fashion, etc. So, I’ve been seeking out those spaces more and more in recent years.
Right now, I’ve pitched an article to Anime Feminist, and they’ve expressed an interest in one of my ideas, so I’m currently working on a draft for that. I’ve also pitched a personal essay to a relatively new website entitled The Brave Some, which is a site dedicated to the voices, fiction, and art of black and brown femmes and is run by two black women named Jordan McDonald and Maia Brown.
I found both of these websites through a Twitter account called Writers of Color, which specifically boosts publications not only looking for writers of color but also LGBTQIA+, neurodivergent, disabled, and trans writers. I’ve seen tons of other calls for submissions, and I might be pitching to more publications soon, so I might be back to fill you guys in on how that goes later.
2WO.) Working On Fan Projects
I’ve been writing fan fiction for about seven years, and I love it so much. I’ve seen a great many fan works come to fruition over the years, and it is a wonderful thing to see when fans pour themselves into something so much and receive recognition for their efforts. It’s an amazing thing to witness, and now I’m actually going to be a part of one such project.
The fan project I’m working on right now is called the BNHA Villain Zine. For those who may not know, BNHA stands for Boku no Hero Academia, or My Hero Academia for those who prefer the English title. It’s a current running shounen manga/anime about a world where superhero is a completely common job and the protagonist attends a high school that trains Japan’s future Heroes. It’s sounds so silly, I know, but it’s actually really fun. I actually did a super review & commentary for, like, the first ten episodes of the second season, so you can check that out if you’re interested. I’m going to catch-up, I swear.
Anyway, the BNHA Villain Zine is a fanzine focusing on the canon villains of BNHA, it’s not an AU (alternate universe) zine, although there is one of those in the works as well that I’m planning on applying for, where both artists and writers create content revolving around the series’s antagonists. It can be funny, gritty, weird, anything really. I applied as a writer and I got accepted, which felt really good after being rejected for two other zines a little bit prior. There are a total of nine writers and 30 fan artists (I know, the huge difference was weird for me, too). Some of the artists are working on a Halloween Special zine, but I don’t really know what that is, so I’m just going to wait and see with the rest of you guys.
There are three more BNHA zines in the works that I’m planning on applying for soon, but I’ll talk more about those at a later date.
I’m also working on getting a zine of my own started, but at this point, nothing’s set in stone. I’ll come back to that at another time.
3HREE.) School Stuff. Yay.
So, like most people, I recently started going back to school, and I’m already ready for it to be over. Everything just feels so menial and worthless, especially those random computer classes that they have you take.
Right now, we’re reading Frankenstein in English 262, and that’s about one of the only “classics” that I actually enjoy because it’s science fiction. It’s one of the earliest works of science fiction, and I’m a sci-fi/speculative fiction nut. Victor himself kind of gets on my nerves, but that’s how fiction works, we need the hero to be somewhat stupid to keep the plot moving forward.
I have to take Speech. There’s no positive that can be spun from that. Next.
The one bright spot in most of my week is my Drawing I class. I love art, and I love drawing; it’s difficult, but it’s fun. We recently started working on our first conceptual drawing which is just a self portrait, but we’ve done other small projects, so I might be uploading pictures of those later, too.
School’s the whole reason that I’ve been absent for so long. I haven’t posted since maybe the end of July because I was preparing for school, and now that I’m actually back I may not be able to post as often as I would like the way I did in the beginning during the summer. Sad, I know, but in the mean time I’ll try my best to stay engaged with shorter posts.
So that’s it for this quick little life update. I just wanted to get back into this and let you guys know what I’ve been up to in the mean time. Leave a comment and let me know what you’ve been up to, and as always have a fantastic day!!! BYE!!!
